This year's Nelson Sprints Regatta will be dedicated to the achievements of the UBC crew which won Canada's first Olympic gold medal in the sport of rowing. This four-man crew included Nelson, BC native Lorne Loomer along with Archie Mackinnon, Walter d'Hondt and Don Arnold. Don Arnold, stroke of the Olympic winning boat, contributed greatly to the sport of rowing in BC as long-term Rowing BC executive director. In this role, he was instrumental in the re-establishment of the Nelson Rowing Club in the early 1990s. The NRC is excited to welcome Don Arnold, and his wife Linda (as chief umpire), to the Nelson Sprints Regatta this August.
Added to this year's program is the opportunity to try a variety of coastal rowing boats. The RowBC Coastal Rowing Team will be facilitating a come and try session on Saturday after the BBQ and Awards for those who are interested. This will be followed by a 3km fun event on Sunday morning from 8-10:30am. There is no extra cost associated with the Coastal Rowing experience.
The Nelson Sprints Regatta is open to rowers of all ages and experience. Races will include 500m sprints for novice crews in both junior and masters 1X's and 2X's. All other races will be 1000m. Boat types include 1X, 2X and 4X. A minimum of three entries is required to make an event. The emphasis at the Nelson Sprints is on fun and friendly competition.
The regatta entry fee is $55. This fee includes entry in multiple races and a post-race BBQ and Awards ceremony. A local school for Registered Massage Therapists will be set up on site to offer free massages to all participants. Individual registration of each athlete must be made via Regatta Central. The site will give registrants the option to pay online, however, we would prefer to collect payments by cheque or cash to the Nelson Rowing Club.
The Nelson Rowing Club requests that each coach/organizer submit a list of rowers and entries (including first and last names and ages) to the Regatta Chair at firstname.lastname@example.org by July 31. One payment per club is appreciated.
Attendance of extra guests at the BBQ and Awards ceremony will be welcomed at $10/person. Advance notice is required to accommodate extra guests at the BBQ.
