Welcome to the 2025 Rowing BC Provincial Championships Regatta!

Rowing BC is looking forward to hosting this regatta on the 2000m Burnaby Lake course on the weekend of July 11-13, 2025. Thank you to the Province of BC, viaSport BC, and Sport Tourism Burnaby for their financial support of this event. 

The Rowing BC Provincial Championships Regatta exists to: 

• Provide a pinnacle event for Junior and Senior athletes in the Summer
• Create an excellent competitive racing opportunity 
• Prepare crews to attend the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in August
• Identify athletes for Team BC performance support
• Establish pre-ranking Team BC list for 2025 National Rowing Championships

This regatta will include championship-level competition in the following event categories: 

• U17 Men's and Women's 1x, 2x, 4x
• U19 Men's and Women's 1x, 2x, 2-, 4x, 4+
• Open (Senior) Men's and Women's 1x, Lwt 1x, 2x, Lwt 2x, 2-, 4x, 4-, Lwt 4-, 8+
• Para Men's and Women's PR1 1x, PR2 1x, PR3 1x, PR3 2x, PR3 2-
• When placing entries, look for the overall cateogry (ex. "Men's 1x") then choose the appropriate division for your entry from within the options (ex. "Men's 1x" Division = U19). This will ensure your entry is categorized appropriately both for race progressions and final standings. 

Running a great regatta also takes great volunteers! Sign up for a few hours, or help us all weekend. Some of the best viewing points are the volunteer positions on the water! Volunteer registration will be linked HERE closer to the regatta date.

Eligibility to compete: 

• This is a championship event and is not intended for novice athletes. 
• All athletes must have a valid membership with Rowing Canada Aviron or US Rowing.
• Awards in each category will be given to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers, regardless of their province/country of origin. Additional "BC Champion" awards will be given to the fastest BC-based athlete in each category. 
• The regatta will follow all of the Rowing Canada Aviron Rules of Racing with only one exception.
  • Exception to Rule 3.9 Re: Para Equipment. Instead of following World Rowing Appendix R14 7.d.i, this regatta will allow boats with pontoons to have the pontoons affixed above the waterline if that is what the athlete is used to and can safely race with. 
• Weigh-Ins will be open for athletes on Friday afternoon from 1:00-3:00 PM. All athletes in LWT boats must weigh-in during this period. Their weight will apply for the entire weekend of racing without the need to weigh in again. Weigh-ins will be open on Sunday morning from 6:00-7:00 AM for coxswains only. Weight limits will be 73.5 kg for Men and 60 kg for Women (one kg above standard Rules of Racing).
• Requests for composite crews must be submitted in writing to [email protected] with a rationale for why the composite boat is needed. Composite boats will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Progression System:

• To create the closest-possible racing experience, all boats will race "Open" while being awarded seperately. This should make for tight finals and exciting racing for all.
• Those categories with over 12 entries will race in a Time Trial, followed by a semi-final, and final. Those categories with 12 or fewer entries will race in a Heat and Final. All entries will progress through all rounds of racing. 
• Example: Open Men's 1x is expected to need a Time Trial. Within this Time Trial will be included the U17 Men's 1x, U19 Men's 1x, Open Men's 1x, Open Men's Lwt 1x, PR1 Men's 1x and PR2 Men's 1x. Based on their results in the Time Trial, all of these boats will move into Semi-Finals, and then Finals. In the Semi-Finals and Finals, boats will be at the start line together regardless of original entry category. After the Final has been raced, awards will be given to the winners of each of the original categories.
• Big Boats (4x, 4-, 4+, and 8+) will also race "Open" while be awarded seperately, although it is not expected that Time Trials will be needed so these boats would be racing in a Heat and Final.
• Awards in each category will be given to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers, regardless of their province/country of origin. Additional "BC Champion" awards will be given to the fastest BC-based athlete in each category. Awards will be given according to the n-1 rule (ie. If there is only one competitor in the category, a medal would not be given).
• Time Trials will be raced over 1900m. Heats, Semi-Finals and Finals will be raced over 2000m.
• Small Boat progression = All boats start in a TT. Following the TT, 2 Semi-Finals and 2 Finals are created for each 12 entries. (For example, in the case of 19 entries, the top 12 finishers in the TT go to  SFAB, the next 6 boats go to SFC and 1 boat goes to SFD.  The top 3 from each SFAB goes to FA, the lower 3 to FB, all 6 boats from SFC go to FC and the single boat in SFD goes to FD.)
• Big Boat progression = All boats start in a heat. 1 heat and 1 final for 2-6 entries, 2 heats and 2 finals for 7-12 entries, and 3 heats and 3 finals for 13-18 entries.

Order of Racing: 

• Rowing BC has done our best to create an order of racing that would facilitate rest for athletes who are racing multiple entry categories, and ensure equipment sharing is possible between the events that would be most likely to need it.
• As a championship event, athletes are encouraged to focus on a limited number of boats for the purpose of this regatta, showcasing their absolute best without being overtired.

• Trailers:
  • Trailers arriving at Burnaby Lake must coordinate their arrival time with Rowing BC Director of Performance, Terry Paul ([email protected]) so that your parking spot and allocated space for team tents etc. is made available to you. Trailers may begin arriving in the morning of Friday, July 11, 2025. 
• Training Sessions:
  • Training times TBA.
  • Coaches wanting to make use of the training session times must provide their own safety boat drivers with valid Pleasure Craft Operator's Card (PCOC). The Safety Officer for this regatta will be checking PCOCs at the dock before boats are able to launch. 
• Support for your team:
  • Teams are encouraged to bring their own tents for set up of an athlete space near their trailer and/or on the viewing platform. Teams are encouraged to consider bikes, ergs, etc. as on-land warm-up and cool-down options. No warm up and cool down space will be provided in the Pavilion. 
• Spectators:
  • Spectator viewing is available from the viewing platform as well as from inside the Pavilion.
• Concession:
  • A concession will be available via a tent in the parking lot and a more substantial concession in the pavilion. Food options will be available for anyone and everyone! Come check it out. Payment will be possible by cash and/or square reader.
