1. WEATHER ALERT:

The weather is expected to be hot, partly sunny with a chance of showers and thunderstorms and highs between 86 to 90 degF. Please help your rowers understand the signs and symptoms of over-heating:
* Muscle cramps
* Nausea or vomiting
* Weakness
* Headache
* Dizziness
* Confusion

If you develop any of these symptoms, you must lower your body temperature and get hydrated. If you ignore these symptoms, your condition can worsen, resulting in a medical emergency. Stop exercising immediately and get out of the heat. Have someone stay with you who can help monitor your condition. Remove extra clothing or sports equipment. Drink fluids — water or a sports drink. If possible, fan your body or wet down your body with cool water. If you don't feel better within 30 minutes, contact your doctor. If you have signs of heatstroke, seek immediate medical help.

PREVENTION:

Drink plenty of fluids. Dehydration is a key factor in heat illness. Help your body sweat and cool down by staying well hydrated with water. DON'T WAIT UNTIL YOU'RE THIRSTY TO DRINK. If you plan to exercise intensely or for longer than one hour, consider a sports drink instead of water. Sports drinks can replace the sodium, chloride and potassium you lose through sweating. Avoid alcoholic drinks because they actually promote fluid loss.

Dress appropriately. Lightweight, loose fitting clothing helps sweat evaporate and keeps you cooler. Avoid dark colors, which can absorb heat. Wear a light-colored, wide-brimmed hat.

Wear sunscreen. A sunburn decreases your body's ability to cool itself.

2. Railroad Trespass

Please do not cross the railroad tracks above the boathouse, near the intersection of Main and Depot Streets. You  may be tempted to cross to reach the walking path to the boathouse after parking for the MCI, but you may be ticketed for trespassing.

People walking on railroad property  including the tracks, railroad bed and adjoining easement  would be considered to be trespassing, which is a misdemeanor offense. This law, Section 462.273 of the Michigan Compiled Laws, is in place to provide safety for train travel and people along the tracks.

3. PARKING

New for 2011--NO cars will be allowed into Bandemer Park.  Guests are advised to bring a wagon to transport goods to the rowing area.  Because of the high volume of trailers, there is no room for turning around cars, so please be advised that you will be directed to one of the nearby lots for parking.  Cars with singles will be directed to the A-frame boat carrier just inside Main Street, where boats can be dropped off while parking your car.
