8th Annual Springfield Riverfront Regatta

  • Hosted By: Pioneer Valley Riverfront Club

The Springfield Riverfront Regatta began in 2005 as a celebration of the river.  In conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the Pioneer Valley Yacht Club, a number of rowers got together to open their venue up to Northeast rowers for a little fun and competition.  Ever since this first event, this celebration has continued to thrive with local rowers hosting the event and showcasing their home course.

The Pioneer Valley Riverfront Club recently incorporated and became a 501(c)3 charitable organization to help sustain it's educational and community outreach efforts.  With growth most programs (kids, adults, sweep and sculling), PVRC is poised for a great future.  In early 2012, the City of Springfield announced that PVRC had won the bid to run programs from the boathouse at North Riverfront Park in the North End of Springfield, MA.  The boathouse structure was built in 1901 as the home of the Rockrimmon Boat Club, but it has had no rowing done out of the facility since the 1960's.  We hope to soon be doing the initial construction necessary to move programs into the boathouse and later consider a more signficant "overhaul" of the building.

2011 was a memorable year for Springfield and our regatta.  In early June, a tornado flew into Springfield right over the starting line of our race course.  And, in late August, Hurricane Irene traveled up the Connecticut River valley dropping loads of rain in the watershed.  Vermont was especially hard hit.  As a result of the very unusual early Fall flooding, we were forced to cancel our regatta for the very first time in order to prioritize the safety of all of our treasured participants.  Thankfully, we were able to save people a potentially wasted trip by cancelling before race day.  Despite the anti-climax of the event and with the support of our sponsors, we were able to issue refunds to registrants who requested them.  And, proudly, we can report that a majority of the registrants chose to designate the fee as a donation to our charitable cause.
