September 1856 the first rowing competition on the Cuyahoga River took place.
As reported in the local papers, over 20,000 people attended this event as The Ivanhoe Boat Club of Cleveland won its race against the Rover Boat Club of Sandusky.
The Mazeppa, a men's four with coxswain, was raced from what is now the West Third Street bridge to what is now the Carter Road bridge (1.5 miles) in 12:05. Today, West 3rd serves as the start line and Carter Road is next to the boathouse and spectator/launch site for the Head of the Cuyahoga (HOT C)
THE HOT C will commemorate this anniversary with the introduction of two trophies.
2006 Ivanhoe Boat Club Award Will be presented for the first time to the men's 4+ (junior, open or masters) with the overall best time in honor of the 150th ANNIVERSARY OF RACING THE CUYAHOGA
2006 Christ Ernst "A Hero for Daisy" Award Will be presented for the first time to the women's 8+ (junior, open or masters) with the overall best time. Christ Ernst a former Yale and Olympic Rower is a noted advocate of women's sports.
