September 24 update

Hello rowers and paddlers:

It is with great regret that the Portland Row for the Cure race committee announces the cancellation of the 2014 Row for the Cure.

Today we were informed by various government agencies that the current blue green toxic algae advisory on the lower Willamette River will not be lifted before the coming weekend.   While we have received rain this week, there is very little current and the rains have only increased the nutrient load in the river.

After consultations with USRowing, our insurance carrier, and the USRowing referees that were scheduled to work the race, we came to the conclusion that we needed to cancel.   While we do not want to expose participants to any undue risks, a larger concern is with the rowing coaches and referees that act as first responders during the event.  Immersion in water is not uncommon at regattas, and in such a case, rescuers would likely find themselves in the water, helping participants.

We would like to invite ALL registered participants to attend a free catered brunch and social at the regatta site on Sunday morning at 10am.  Please take this opportunity to socialize with fellow participants, honor our survivors and recognize our largest fundraisers and corporate partners. There will be a short program at 11am.  Participants may also pick up their Row for the Cure swag bags at the Sunday morning event.

We are heartened by the fundraising of many participants and the support for the local affiliate of Komen that participation in the Row for the Cure represents.

For organizations that do not plan to attend any of the Sunday morning festivities, partial refunds of entry fees are available.   We do remind everyone that since all entry fees beyond the costs of staging the event go to the local affiliate of Komen, refunds will impact the amount of money we raise this year.

You may contact us with any questions, and we hope to see many of you on Sunday morning at 10am.

Please disseminate this notice to all race participants in your organization.

Sincerely,

Juanita Chambers

The Willamette River is under a blue green algae advisory.  The race committee will make a decision about the regatta at noon on Friday, September 26..   Stay tuned for details.

We are looking forward to seeing rowers and paddlers at the 21st Portland Row for the Cure.

Participants will notice that we have raised the entry fee by $10 per person.   Twenty-one years ago, we started this regatta inspried by the Race for the Cure run, which, at the time, charged $25 per person.  We have not raised our entry fees in the twenty years since.  Now the Race for the Cure charges $45 per person for their standard running race.

We are going 1/2 way, with a $35 per person fee.  As all entry fees collected less the basic expenses of hosting the regatta are donated to Komen of Oregon/SW Washington, you can be assured that this change will only increase the amount of money going to Komen of Oregon/SW Washington.
