Beat the Beast

  • Feb 2, 2020
  • indoor
  • Vancouver, BC (CAN)
  • Hosted By: St. George's School
  • Sanctioned by RCA and Rowing BC (2019)

The 2020 Beat the Beast will feature new events, new distances and we’ll continue our relationship with KidSport.

A portion of each entry fee will be donated to KidSport to help local kids participate in sport.  You'll be able to ask about KidSport during the Beast and if you want to donate online you'll be able to do that as well.  It's a great charity and we're looking forward to seeing how many kids we can help.

*Important Note to Participants/Coaches/Clubs*

Over the last several months we’ve engaged in conversations with RCA and Rowing BC on how to make indoor events more fun/exciting.  For the 2019 Beat the Beast we introduced the relay events which were a highlight for many racers and spectators.  The energy in the room was incredible and everyone had a great time.  We received many comments to this effect.  For the 2020 Beat the Beast not only will we continue the relay event but we’ve introduced a 500m sprint event which should also be exciting.

Although we tried to keep costs down, RCA and Rowing BC were adamant that full seat fees be paid by ALL participants in our relay and 500m events.  As you’ll see in our fee structure, the only costs to enter those events are those seat fees.  There is not and “entry fee” for these events as the focus for the St. George’s Rowing Team and Beat the Beast is to help create a great event and engage with the community.  The only thing we ask is that clubs/participants not just enter these two events and not the longer (standard) distance ones.  There are obvious costs to hosting the event and unfortunately we cannot donate money to Kidsport for entries in those events where no entry is being paid.  We ask that you enter a full length (1km or 2km) event and then you are more than welcome to join us in the sprint events as well.

We have and will continue to talk to RCA and Rowing BC about this issue in the coming year and we’re hoping to continue to provide a great event while keeping costs down for local clubs and participants.  If you have any comments please don’t hesitate to email me.

**New Changes to Racing this Year**

  1. We’re trying to provide an opportunity for athletes to race multiple times through the day if athletes want.  We did our best to make sure that our event is affordable while taking multiple opportunities to race through the day.

  2. Offering more distances for masters athletes.

We’ll also continue with the relay format we started last year.  It was a highlight last year with tonnes of energy and excitement!

The 2km relay race with results based on a gold standard.  Lightweights versus Heavyweights, Men versus Women.  (most gold standards will be based on 2km worlds best time).  Here's a great example of how the relay will be done.  Key to this race is the switches ;)   CHECK HERE
