Lake Lure was created and the town opened in 1927.  Marketed as an investment opportunity to share in the soon-to-be revenues of the new hydro-electric generator placed in the dam.

That generator remains the primary income for the Town of Lake Lure.  Much of the area's residents are part timers who provide many beatuiful properties to rent while they are away.  The "high" season for the town is from Memorial Day through Labor Day due to the use of the lake, where many of our visitors came to sleep away camps as children.  (Lake Lure was one of the locations used to film "Dirty Dancing" and the town hosts the "Dirty Dancing festival each fall)

Lake Lure Racing & Rowing Retreats is partnering with the community to develop the sport of rowing for the community, the local charter school and to help promote the area as a premier spring training venue.  The lake currently hosts about 16 schools each spring and are looking to acommodate many more.

The Lake Lure area known as the Hickory Nut Gorge region is home to fabulous rock climbing, exceptional hiking and sight-seeing, running and cycling.  One of the rivers feeding the lake is very popular for whiteware kayaking and Lake Lure hosts competitive swims each summer.  Lake Lure is about 25 mountain road miles from Asheville and Black Mountain, both charming towns to visit.
