longsleeve Wearable art (in a tech fabric!) by Brandon Gabriel, internationally renowned and award winning Kwantlen First Nation multi-talented mixed media artist. He was born and raised on the Kwantlen First Nation reserve in Fort Langley, at the water that we row on. Fraser River Sturgeon and Fort Langley Bastion – Artist’s comments I chose three unique icons of the world-famous community and water body where the event is held. One icon, depicts the ancient sturgeon species, whose ancestors date back to the age of dinosaurs. Sturdy, constant, and powerful. Their time on this planet beats human beings by millions of years. An important cultural and spiritual symbol in Coast Salish and Kwantlen cosmological narratives.Another important icon, is the historic Hudson’s Bay Company’s Fort Langley bastion. Which is world famous, and an important symbol to national and local heritage, and tells the story of settlement by HBC traders on unceded Kwantlen First Nation lands and waters. The depiction is done in the iconic Coast Salish art style. The entire art symbol represents triumph over adversity and longevity. Two themes relatable to human achievement for this exciting public sporting event.
