ANNOUNCING... THE 1ST 2020 “RECORD-EAGLE SPRINTS” SUMMER REGATTA!

Sunday July 19, 7am arrive , 8am races start! In order to honor and offer at least a single meaningful spring sport competition to all Class of 2020 regional high school athletes, the Traverse City Record-Eagle newspaper is commendably sponsoring tournaments (all in the same week) in baseball, softball, soccer and rowing, beginning with rowing on Sunday morning the 19th of July.

Since many other rowers also want a summer competition in Northern Michigan, and since everyone is carefully monitoring COVID19 - the format for racing will be limited to singles and same-household doubles, even if all social distancing restrictions in Northern Michigan should be lifted before that date. Currently in Leelanau we are well below the USRowing guidance of fewer than 50 cases per 100,000 residents. But we ask you not to travel to this regatta from more than 2 hours away unless you are already summering here or on vacation to help contain spread in our area. You are welcome to come for the week as a rowing “camp” and train and practice with our coaches before the race if you are coming from more than two hours away. To accommodate those of all ages whose clubs and/or programs remain completely shut down, LLRC will offer a weekend membership in order to manage insurance and liability risk for any determined athletes who may want to participate. Younger athletes unaccompanied by a coach or parents will not be permitted to race, so at least bring your parents.

Our priority for this regatta, no different than any other in our history, is safety. In addition to a USRowing chief referee, we have also appointed a chief medical officer in accordance with USRowing requirements for a registered regatta and will have all COVID19 risks thoroughly managed. We intend to host races welcoming all U19, U17 and U15 athletes as well as all collegiate/open, inclusive, middle schoolers and masters and in all events, lightweights. Same household doubles races will welcome all roommates, mother:daughter/son, father:daughter/son and mixed/same-sex siblings. Bring your family and enter multiple fun races!

Since many athletes still have no access to their own team equipment, we are in a position to rent equipment to those in need. If you haven’t rowed at all on-water yet this entire year, or haven’t yet learned to scull, consider arriving Friday and participating in a preparatory 3 row weekend “tune-up,” including the regatta, with our triple world champion sculler in the quad and sweep rower Olympian Coach Viktor Grebennykov.

We will also be hosting a 1 kilometer flat water sprint for SurfSkis at 11am! Register under the SurkSki Sprint!

Since weekend accommodations this time of year in Northern Michigan are generally few and far between - and expensive, Fountain Point will offer a camping option for any athletes interested (Porta-Potty only provides) Or call Fountain Point to see if you can book rooms.

You may also call 231.866.0877 directly with any questions/concerns or email [email protected], we expect a relaxed, low stress and really fun weekend!
Hope you can join us!
