St. Catharines Coastal Beach Sprints & RCA Final Qualifier
Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28, 2022

Welcome to the St. Catharines Coastal Beach Sprints and RCA Final Qualifier!  This exciting regatta is returning to Lakeside Park in Port Dalhousie following its inaugural debut in 2019.  It will be exciting to watch the action from the beach or participate for a spot on Team Canada at international events. Athletes will have mulitple chances to advance in head to head racing toward a final between the two fastest individuals/ or crews. Boats will be provided to ensure fairness.  Athletes will need to bring their own oars. 

The event is being hosted by AMP Rowing and is sanctioned by Rowing Canada Aviron.  As a designated FINAL QUALIFIER, athletes may be selected to represent Canada in a series of international Coastal Beach Sprint events based on their performance at this event.

Organizers are grateful for the support of the City of St. Catharines to this event.  

The following information will help make the weekend a great experience for you:

Events:
Open:  CW1x (women’s solo), CM1x (men’s solo), CMix2x (mixed double)
U19:  CJW2x (U19 women’s double), CJM2x (U19 men’s double), CJMix2x (U19 mixed double)

Age & Weight Categories:  

There are no weight categories for this event.   For entry into the U19 events, athletes must be 18 years of age or younger until December 31, 2022.  

Entry Fees:    All solo events: $60 + $30.00 equipment rental fee + applicable seat fees
                         All doubles events:  $120 + $40.00 equipment rental fee + applicable seat fees
        
Entry Deadline:  Entries closed on Tuesday August 23, 2022. If athletes are eligible for RCA support based on performance at one of the 2022 qualifying Coastal Beach Sprint events in Canada, they still need to register by this deadline. 

Equipment:  All coastal boats required for this event will be provided at the event site with rental fees provided in Entry Fees above. Participants are required to provide their own oars.   

Preliminary Schedule & Draw:  The draw is now posted under the Heat Sheet/Draw tab here at Regatta Central.

Race Course:  The race course is made up of two sections:  a land section and a water section.  The land section consists of an approximately 50m path on the beach to the waters’ edge.  The water section of the course will be laid out with two lanes, a red lane and a yellow lane.  Each lane will be 250 meters long with three buoys (set at approximately 85m + 85m +80m).  Crews will slalom out around the buoys and row straight back to the beach. The designated runner will then jump out of the boat and run up to  50m through the finish line and grab the flag in the sand to complete the race.

  • Saturday, August 27 morning:  Time Trials for all Solo events CW1x, CM1x
  • Saturday, August 27 mid-morning to afternoon: Heats, Repechage and Finals for CW1x, CM1x
  • Sunday, August 28 morning:  Time Trials for all Doubles: CW2x CJW2x, CM2x, CJM2x CMix2x, CJMix2x
  • Sunday August 28 mid-morning to afternoon:  Heats, Reps and Finals for all Doubles
  • Awards Ceremony for Solos on Saturday and Doubles on Sundays at the end of racing.

Racing will start at  9:00 AM on Saturday and Sunday. subject to adjustment due to weather and waves. 

Coaches & Participants Pre-Race Meetings:  A preliminary coaches and participants meeting will be held on Friday, August 26 at 7:00 pm at Lakeside Park Beach at the Control Commission at the Beach.  The mandatory coach/participant meeting will be held at 7:45 am on Saturday, August 27 at the Control Commission on the Beach.  

Training Times:  All equipment is supplied for this event, so training will be limited.  There will be a training session on Friday, August 26, 2022 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm for competitors to come and try the boats. 
There will also be a short training session on Saturday, August 27 from 8:00am to 9:20 am.  Competitors must register by email to [email protected] if they would like to train during this period.  Indicate if you would like to use a C1x or C2x. Since there are a limited number of boats, we will allocate short training periods to accommodate as many crews as possible.  

Progression System & Results:   
For this event the Progression System will be used.  (subject to change based on direction of the Chief Umpire, as per the RCA Rules of Racing).   Results will be posted on this site at the completion of the weekend's racing and on this site on Monday Aug 29.

Rules:  The RCA Rules of Racing will be applied.  

Exceptions to the RCA Rules of Racing: 

  • 7.3- Entries- The draw will be released two days before the event.
  • Appendix 4- The starter will be at ground level

Important Information:  Participants are encouraged to ride share to the event and/or cycle or take public transportation. Parking is available at the beach.  Free parking is available at Ontario Jaycee Gardens Park, 543 Ontario St., and access Rennie Park, the harbour and Lakeside Park via the pedestrian bridge or at the Port Dalhousie Pier Marina, 80 Lighthouse Road.  Both spots are approximately 1.6 km from the Lakeside Park (about a 15 min. walk).
