Welcome to the 2025 Rowing BC Provincial Championships Regatta!
Please read the regatta package information below in its entirety as some information has changed from previous years.
Rowing BC is looking forward to hosting this regatta on the 2000m Burnaby Lake course on the weekend of July 11-13, 2025.
We recognize that Burnaby Lake is located on the ancestral, and unceded territory of the hən̓qəmin̓əm̓ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh speaking peoples and are thankful to be able to host this event on these lands.
The Rowing BC Provincial Championships Regatta exists to:
- Provide a pinnacle event for Junior and Senior athletes in the Summer
- Create an excellent competitive racing opportunity
- Prepare crews to attend the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in August
- Identify athletes for Team BC performance support
- Establish pre-ranking Team BC list for 2025 National Rowing Championships
This regatta will include championship-level competition in the following categories:
- U17 Men's and Women's 1x, 2x, 4x
- U19 Men's and Women's 1x, 2x, 2-, 4x
- Open (Senior) Men's and Women's 1x, 2x, LWT 2x, 2-, 4x, 4-, 8+
- Para Men's and Women's PR1 1x, PR2 1x, PR3 1x, PR3 2x, PR3 2-
- *NEW* Mixed 8+
- Note: This category is limited to the first 6 boats that submit an entry. This category is included at the end of the race day on Saturday so that athletes can also focus on a Men’s or Women’s 8+ racing on Sunday. See the draft schedule HERE.
Volunteer Information
- Sign up for a few hours, or help us all weekend. Some of the best viewing points are the volunteer positions on the water! Sign up HERE.
- Volunteers should plan to be at the regatta site at least 20 minutes prior to their shift. Volunteer check-in is located inside of the pavilion, beside the concession.
Eligibility
- This is a championship event and is not intended for novice athletes.
- All athletes must have a valid membership with Rowing Canada Aviron or US Rowing.
- Awards in each category will be given to the 1st place finishers, regardless of their province/country of origin.
- Requests for composite crews must be submitted in writing to [email protected] with a rationale for why the composite boat is needed. Composite crew requests are due one week before the standard entry deadline. Composite boats will be considered on a case-by-case basis. All composite entries will race as exhibition.
Entries
- Entries must be made through Regatta Central
- Standard Entries due 11:59 pm Monday, June 30, 2025
- Late Entries (subject to additional fee) due 3:00 pm Monday, July 7, 2025
- Scratch Window until 3:00 pm Monday, July 7, 2025. Scratches made after this time will not be refunded.
- When placing entries, look for the overall category (ex. "Men's 1x") then choose the appropriate division for your entry from within the options (ex. "Men's 1x" Division = U19). This will ensure your entry is categorized appropriately both for race progressions and final standings.
Progression System
- To create the closest-possible racing experience, all boats will race "Open" while being awarded separately by division. This should make for tight finals and exciting racing for all.
- Boats will move through rounds of racing as follows:
- All 1x, 2x and 2- entries start in a Time Trial (TT).
- In the 1x and 2x, entries 1-36 progress from the TT into a semi-final. 1-18 in the A/B/C semi-final and 17-36 in the D/E/F semi-final. From each semi-final, the top two boats go into the A final, next two to B final, and final two to C final (same system followed for the D/E/F finals from the D/E/F semi-finals). Boats 37+ from the TT progress straight into Final G, H, I or J accordingly.
- In the 2-, entries 1-18 progress from the TT into semi-final A/B/C. From each semi-final, the top two boats go into the A final, next two to B final, and final two to C final. Boats 19+ from the TT progress straight into the D and E finals accordingly.
- In the 4x, 4- and 8+ boats begin in a heat. If there are two heats, top three boats move into the A final and the next three move into the B final. If there are three heats, top two boats move into the A final, next two into the B final, and final two into the C final. If there are more than 18 boats in any of those categories, the scheduled heats will be changed into semi-finals and boats would begin in the TT on Friday afternoon and then progress into A/B/C semi-finals following the same format as the 2- listed above. (In this case, a Final D would be added to the Sunday afternoon schedule as needed).
- In the Para 1xs, assuming there are less than 6 entries, all boats will complete the TT and progress into the Para 1x Final (no semi-final). In the Final, staggered starts may be used to create meaningful race opportunities despite the mixed race categories (Mens and Womens, PR1, PR2 and PR3).
Provisional Schedule
- Rowing BC has done our best to create an order of racing that would facilitate rest for athletes who are racing multiple entry categories, and ensure equipment sharing is possible between the events that would be most likely to need it.
- As a championship event, athletes are encouraged to focus on a limited number of boats for the purpose of this regatta, showcasing their absolute best without being overtired.
- Practice will take place Friday 12:00-2:00 PM. Coaches wanting to make use of the training session times must provide their own safety boat drivers with valid Pleasure Craft Operator's Card (PCOC). The Safety Officer for this regatta will be checking PCOCs at the dock before boats are able to launch.
- In general, racing will take place Friday 3:00-5:30 PM, Saturday 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM, and Sunday 8:00 AM - 1:30 PM with a provisional schedule, based on entry numbers from previous years as follows AS SHOWN HERE.
Results
- Results will be available on a Regatta Master Live Link and via Regatta Central.
Awards and Standings
- Award presentations will take place directly after each Final in which there was a division winner. Those who are winning a division are invited to come straight to the awards area (beside the Finish Tent) after their race to receive their medals and have a photo opportunity. A set of stretchers will be available to hold your boat during the awards presentation.
- Awards in each category will be given only to the 1st place finishers, regardless of their province/country of origin.
- Awards will be given according to the n-1 rule (ie. If there is only one competitor in the category, a medal would not be given).
- For athletes racing in a restricted division, standings will be based on the placing in the finals – in order of highest level final to lowest, regardless of times. For example, if the top U19 performance is 4th place in the A Final, that athlete will be the winner of the U19 division. If the next U19 performance is 1st in the B final, that athlete will be 2nd in the U19 division, regardless of their time.
- It is possible for an athlete in a restricted division to win their division and the division above them. For example, if a U19 athlete is 1st in U19 and U23, they will receive both medals.
Weigh-in Information
- One weigh-in result will be used for each athlete/coxswain for the entire regatta weekend.
- The weigh-in for all lightweight athletes (Men’s and Women’s LWT 2x) will be open from 1:30-3:30 PM on Friday, July 11, 2025. A test scale will also be available.

Equipment
- This regatta will allow para boats with pontoons to have the pontoons affixed above the waterline if that is what the athlete is used to and can safely race with. There are no other exceptions to the RCA rules of racing regarding equipment.
- Clubs bringing trailers, please contact Terry Paul no later than Wednesday, July 9, 2025 to secure your trailer parking spot. Trailers are welcome onsite the morning of Friday, July 11, 2025. Tow-vehicles will need to park in the gravel parking lot once the trailer has been dropped off.
- For any crews travelling from outside of BC, please do your part to keep invasive zebra and quagga mussels out of our waters by ensuring to CLEAN, DRAIN and DRY all equipment before loading your trailer. More information on what you can do to prevent the spread of invasive species can be found HERE. Need your boats cleaned? Reach out to [email protected] to arrange decontamination cleaning.
