Head of the Dog

  • 2022 Registered Regatta

The Head of the Dog has been a fixture on the NW fall rowing calendar for around 30 years.  Portland Boat Club has been the long time steward of the event.

Station L Rowing Club is stepping in to run the regatta, but keeping most if not all of the same traditions and cherry attitude intact.

Tiff Wood as the Red Baron             Sally Keller and Sarah Zachem  Best of Breed Trophy         Jen Devine, Lisa Schlenker

After attending  the Green Mountain Head in Putney, Vermont in 1987, the organizers decided that the Northwest deserved its own sculling regatta.  The first event was run on Halloween 1987, with 3 pairs.  Due to that first date, the costume event was born.  The winner of the event gets to take home, and add to, the coveted Best of Breed trophy. We have had every costume from cross dressing french maids, to plumbers who took their coffee break before the finish, to a canoe entry that actually bribed the judges with hot dogs they grilled during the race.
