Head of the Kanawha

  • Hosted By: University of Charleston
  • 2016 Registered Regatta

October 15, 2011 is the date for the Inaugural Head of the Kanawha Regatta. Fall in Charleston, WV is a beautiful time of year, with the leaves turning on the surrounding mountains, the autumn sun reflecting off the State Capitol Dome, and the Kanawha River gently flowing through the center of town.

The date was selected for a variety of reasons:

1. It is a great time of year to row in Charleston

2. It is a good time for a race coming two weeks after the Head of the Ohio, three weeks before the Head of the Hooch, and one week before the Head of the Charles (for those teams and rowers NOT going to Boston!!)

3. Some teams can make a weekend of rowing by stopping in Charleston on Satrurday, and then going on to the Northern Virginia area for a Sunday race.

4. Teams can row both 8's and smaller boats for an excellent workout date and the course is set so you can find out if you really have any speed. With a gentle curve in the start and a gentle curve at the halfway point teams will have plenty of passing space to power on the whole length of the course.

Hope you can join us for another great regatta in Charleston, WV
