WASATCH MOUNTAIN HEAD 2013

Aquatic Invasive Species - All boat trailers and car-top vehicles must fill out a Certificate of Decontamination stating that their boats have not been in contact with infested waters or have been properly decontaminated. Forms are available at the park gate, and details are given at wildlife.utah.gov/mussels/PDF/self_certify.pdf.

PARKING

Passenger car parking is to the north (right) of the restrooms. Passenger vehicles may not park in the trailer and car-top parking area, as we need to keep traffic to a minimum in this area to allow for rower and equipment safety, and to provide a short path to the water for those carrying rowing shells. Additional passenger vehicle parking can be found at the many pavilions nearby, some of which have nice elevated views of the finish area.

LAUNCHING

1) A representative from each crew is required to attend the coaches and coxswains meeting before any boats launch. Weather and course updates will be given at this meeting.

2) The launch is a cement boat ramp – bring water shoes and otherwise prepare for a beach launch. Low water levels mean that beach launching away from the ramp will be too hazardous this year, so please prepare to launch at the ramp only.

3) Bow balls and heel ties will be checked at the ramp – please have these in place before coming to the ramp, as you will not be permitted on the course without these safety devices.

4) NEW THIS YEAR : Concept II style clogs in the boat must have two ties at the heel, one on each side. Additionally, no shoes may be worn in any seat with Concept II clogs.

5) Ensure that your bow number and coxswain bib number are correctly and firmly in place before coming to the ramp. You may want to bring electrical tape to help snug the bow number in place. Bow coxed boats must have the coxswain bib number taped securely to the stern of the shell or pinned to the chest of stroke seat.

THE COURSE

1) Check the course map before launching.

2) This event follows a standard “right hand rule”, that is, boats stay to the right on the waterway with the starboard side nearer to shore. This means that oncoming boats will go by each other on the port side of each boat. The race course is set up to follow the right hand rule, with warmup boats proceeding on the south side of the Rock Cliff arm of the Jordanelle Reservoir, and racing boats proceeding along the north side of this waterway.

3) Non-racing shells must stay off the race course. Interference penalties (60 seconds) apply for non-racing boats straying into the race course.

4) Racing boats have right of way over all other boats.

5) Passing boats have right of way over boats being passed. Failure to give way will result in a penalty (60 seconds).

6) You must pass between the two finish line buoys. Passing outside the finish line buoys will result in a ten second penalty.

7) Follow all marshals’ instructions.

SAFETY

1) Rowing shells must have bow balls. No boat is allowed to launch without a bow ball.

2) Rowing shells with shoes must have heel ties for all shoes in the boat.

3) NEW THIS YEAR : Concept II style clogs in the boat must have two ties at the heel, one on each side. Additionally, no shoes may be worn in any seat with Concept II clogs.

4) Racing boats have right of way over other boats. Non-racing shells must stay off the race course. Interference penalties apply for non-racing boats straying into the race course.

5) If you have an urgent situation, have the coxswain wave both arms till you have alerted someone in a launch.

RACING

1) Your bow number must be visible and correctly placed in order for your time to be recorded correctly. Bow numbers must stay securely in place from start to finish.

2) Be lined up near the start in order of bow number and ready to start 5 minutes before your scheduled start time.

3) Boats will be started in order of bow number, on approximately 15 second intervals. Know where the start is, paddle only when the starter tells you, and bring it up to full speed just before the start buoys.

4) The passing boat has right of way over the boat being passed. Marshals will assess a sixty second penalty for failure to give way.

5) A thirty second penalty is assessed for any unsportsmanlike conduct.

6) The penalty for interference, including any contact is one minute.

7) The penalty for missing a buoy is 10 seconds. Egregious cutting of the course may result in a 30 second penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, or removal from the event.

8) Pass between the marker buoy and the finish line launch in order to have your finish time accurately recorded. Times will not be recorded until the bow passes between the finish buoy and the finish launch.

AWARDS

First, second and third place medals are awarded for each category, with age handicapping applied to masters racing. The “Wendy Whitney Cup” will be awarded to the junior team with the highest total points score. Points are given as follows:
