Head of the Dog Regatta--Mixed 8+ update

Station L Rowing Club is proud to host this most fun of the NW fall head races.  The Dog features all kinds of sculling races, and new for 2023, a charity mixed 8+ relay benefitting the Rett Syndrome Research Trust.  All entry fees from the mixed 8+ will go to the Trust.  We will also post links for individual fundraising and donations.    Each year we will select a different charity to benefit from

The mixed 8+ relay format--

•Two mixed 8+'s will form a team.  If your club does not have enough athletes, we will match you with another club.  We will try to seed the teams evenly.  Station L may have 8+'s that your club can borrow.   If an individual wants to join a mixed 8+ to take part in this, please contact Peter at [email protected]  We will endeavor to place you in a boat and you can just pay your entry fee at the regatta.

•The second mixed 8+ will warm up and be stationed at the 2500 180 degree turn spot on the river

•The first mixed 8+'s of each team will start, head race style from the start line, staggered every 20 seconds.

•With radio updates from the course, we'll set up the 2nd mixed 8+'s in order of how the race is progressing (think of how 400 meter relay runners get set based on who is leading)

•When the first 8+ crosses the turn line, the 2nd will begin, and row to the finish.    Fastest total elapsed time wins.

Timing

  • Saturday 6pm (new time)  Online pre-race meeting-link to be sent out via email to teams Saturday morning

  3. Schedule

    1. The schedule will be close to what’s posted right now on RegattaCentral.
    2. When we send out the bow number draw on Saturday morning you’ll see perhaps some very modest changes
  4. Hot seating

    1. Many of the quads in this race are being used twice.
    2. If you are looking at less than a 40 minute gap from landing to launching, you should plan to hot seat on the dock.
    3. Have crews and oars ready and let the dockmasters know.
    4. Fortunately, the start line is only 750 meters from the dock. . . .
  5. THE TURN

    1. a 180 turn is a feature from HOT Dog regattas of the early 1990’s.
    2. We are bringing it back out of necessity—as the race is being run entirely in the no wake zone of Holgate Channel.
    3. Three things to know:
      1. A race official will be situated 50-100 meters before the turn.  If two boats are near each other, the official will announce over a megaphone which boat will have the right of way on the turn. That way there’s no confusion or interpretation needed.
      2. We are using a 25-30 second start gap for this regatta to avoid major traffic jams on the turn.
      3. At the turn, team boats will be allowed to drag their PORT oars to make the turn using Starboard power.
NOTE, the starboard oars must keep moving, no halting and turning in place.
  6. AWARDS, Potluck

    1. Awards ceremony around 1:15 (after Mixed 8 relay)
    2. Located at the Rail Road museum parking lot next to our clubhouse.
  7. Parking

    1. Use street parking and don’t leave ANYTHING in your car.
    2. There’s more street parking a couple of blocks east of the boatyard.
    3. Those bringing a trailer or car topping their boats, please contact Peter for information.
  8. Results
