John Hunter Regatta Cancelled for 2020

The John Hunter Regatta typically affords an early spring competition for youth and collegiate rowers to dust off their oars and prepare for sprint season. Year over year, despite persnickety March weather in the Atlanta area, the volunteers of SARC have successfully managed to hold the JHR despite temperatures ranging from 40s to 80s, along with water levels from barely having 5 lanes to having the luxury of 7 lanes, in addition to unpredictable winds and rain.  I must, with great regret, announce the first ever cancellation of the John Hunter Regatta.  This decision is not made lightly; however, due to the reasons outlined below, I know that you will understand.

The deluge of rains in February, and thus far in March in the southeast, combined with a rainy forecast in the days leading up to the JHR, has already placed the lake at unprecedented flood conditions.  Currently, the positioning of the docks on either side poses a risk for the boats required to support the JHR, as well as the rowing shells.  Additionally, the large amount of debris coming down the course may put the rowers, boats, and volunteers at risk.  Safety of the participants is of the utmost importance. Consulting with numerous key regatta officials, Lake Lanier Olympic Venue, and our chief referee further cemented this decision.  We feel this action is in the best interest of all parties and understand that it affects the plans and lives of many people.

Another risk of which you all are aware is the threat of the COVID-19 virus. A great number of people have expressed the concerns of which we are all aware. Air travel and congregation of large groups of individuals are of primary concern; secondarily, potential quarantine requirements of some employers whose personnel volunteer at large events make it infeasible for these volunteers to self-quarantine for 14 days post-regatta.

I apologize for the inconvenience and abrupt change to your plans, but under these circumstances, I hope you will understand.  I look forward to seeing you next year on March 20-21, 2021.

Sincerely,

Jeff Kish
