Competivite rowing races have been held on the James River in Richmond for over 100 years.  The most recent series of the VBC Masters Regatta's started in 2005 and continuted until 2019 when the COVID pandemic forced the cancellation of the events in 2020 and 2021.  Until 2015, the VBC Masters Regatta was held at the Richmond downtown location at Rocketts Landing.  In 2015, the Regatta site was moved to the scenic Robious Landing site also along the James River in Midlothian, VA to the west of downtown Richmond. 

There are also High School and Collegiate Regattas held on the James River.
