Beat the Beast Competition Package
Overview:
Beat the Beast in 2024 was an exciting shift, and we are pleased to continue to enhance the engagement throughout the day this year. Sprint Showdowns will remain as finals for all events (excluding virtual races and the Coxie Crawl). We are also happy to announce two overall championships for the day, a Points Championship, and an Efficiency Championship.
Throughout this document, you’ll find important information for registration, eligibility, entries, racing protocols, and more.
Categories of Racing:
Available at this link. Please note this year all in-person events will take place on February 1st, 2025.
Please note that there are fewer categories for Virtual Racing than for in-person. The virtual categories were selected based broadly on what events get the most number of entries for in-person racing.
Eligibility:
To enter an age-bracket category, you must not turn that age in 2025. For example, to race in an Under 17 category, the athlete in question must still be 16 years of age on December 31st, 2025. Athletes or coaches must provide dates of birth during registration.
Lightweight Categories
Men: 75kg | Women: 65kg
Weights are taken from CSSRA lightweight athlete max weight + ~3%. This is marginally different from last year, and has been undertaken in consultation with Kraken Erg to unify the indoor racing weigh-in systems across BC.
Weigh-ins open at 2 hours before the first lightweight race. Each athlete has a one-hour weigh-in window that begins two hours before their race, and ends one hour before.
Medical Information:
All competitors accept on entry that they will be competing in a very strenuous activity. The physical demands of this opportunity require that the competitors are medically, physically, and emotionally fit. There must be no known reason why a competitor is not able to participate safely in this opportunity.
For athletes entering the virtual event, no competitors may compete alone. Another person, preferably an adult, must be available to render assistance if necessary. The name and contact information of this emergency contact must be provided using this supplementary form following registration to be included in the draw.
If a competitor has tested positive for COVID-19, has symptoms of COVID-19, feels unwell, or has recently been suffering from a virus or is on medication for acute illness, they should not participate in Beat the Beast.
Entries & Fees:
Entries are due by midnight PST, Tuesday January 28th. To submit entries, please visit our regatta page on RegattaCentral and submit there. Registration will open in the new year and we will update everyone when it is available.
Late entries may be accepted, assuming the late entry does not create an additional heat for the given event. Late entry fees will cost an additional $10 per entry (see below).
Included in the entry fee this year will be a coaches concession ticket; any club with 10 or more athletes is eligible for coffee and lunch. All eligible coaches should contact Brent Duncan for how to receive their tickets.
Fees
All entry fees include RCA and RowingBC seat fees. Base prices have not gone up, and total costs will only be reflective of changes to the seat fees. It is our hope that not changing last year’s base rate will be helpful as clubs and schools continue to catch up on the cost of living crisis.
Late entries must be paid with cash or cheque and will have a flat $10 late fee.
In-person races will cost $25.35; after seat fees, that will total $32.85 per athlete.
Virtual races and the Coxie Crawl will cost $10; after seat fees, that will total $17.50.
Relay races will cost $20 per team; after seat fees, a team will cost $50.00.
Scratches submitted after the Scratch Deadline (midnight January 30th, after the Preliminary Draw is circulated) will not be eligible for refund.
Credit card payment is available on RegattaCentral.
If paying by cheque, please address cheques to:

Draw:
A preliminary draw will be posted to our website by the end of day Thursday, January 30th. Any discrepancies should be sent to Brent Duncan immediately.
Final draw will be published on Friday, January 31st.
Progression Rules for Sprint Showdowns
Virtual entries will not be eligible for the Sprint Showdown.
Progression to the Sprint Showdowns will depend on the number of entries, per the following table:
- 1-8 entries -> Top 3 to Final
- 9-18 entries -> Top 5 to Final
- 19+ entries -> Top 10 to Final
Sprint Showdowns will be held per Event, but will be progressed from the Categories. For example, Event #5 - Junior B Men has two Categories, Lightweight and Heavyweight. Athletes will progress from both the Lightweight and Heavyweight races to race in one Junior B Men Sprint Showdown.
In this example, if there were 12 entries in the Lightweight category, and 24 entries in the Heavyweight category, the Junior B Men Sprint Showdown would include the top 5 Lightweight finishers, and the top 10 Heavyweight finishers in one 500m final, with one of those 15 athletes winning the prize.
Sprint Showdowns will take place after all the 2000m races, approximately starting at 1:45pm.
Relay Racing
Relay events will be held at the end of the day, and will consist of teams of four athletes racing 2000m on the same machine. Each competitor must take at least one “turn” on the machine; teams are able to strategize on how often to complete their switches. Only competitors may touch the machine during the race (coaches/coxswains cannot assist in transitions).
Prizes
Shirts will be provided to the top performing athlete(s) under the following circumstances:
- Winners of a Category with at least two entrants
- Top three finishers of a Category with at least eight entrants
Shirts will be presented in an area to be decided, but will be done in waves throughout the morning. These waves will be noted on the draw, and prize-giving for 2000m races will be approximately every 90 minutes.
Winners of the Sprint Showdown will take home a unique commemorative item recognizing their achievement and will be handed out after the Sprints but before the Relays.
The winning team in each Relay Category will also receive shirts.
Virtual entrants will not be eligible for prizes, however, any club/school that submits 5 or more entries will be sent a St. George’s School Rowing care package (while supplies last).
Team Championships
We are excited to introduce a new Points Championship and Efficiency Championship for Beat the Beast going forward. For a club/school to be eligible for either championship, they must have a minimum of ten non-scratched individual entries.
Points Championship
Points will be awarded to any team with more than 10 entries in individual events. Points will be awarded for podium positions in the 2000m races, qualifying for a Sprint Showdown, and winning a Sprint Showdown. The points will be allocated as per the table below.

2000m Second |
2000m Third |

Efficiency Championship
The Efficiency Championship will be awarded to the team who earns the most points (as above) divided by their number of athletes. This will also have a minimum of 10 entries to qualify for the efficiency championship.
Virtual Results:
We will collect results and memory screen photos using this Google Form (link available here). Please ensure your monitor is set to the correct date and time to avoid discrepancies.
Result submissions will be accepted beginning January 30th onward.
The deadline for submissions will be 4:00 PST on February 1st (Race Day). Late submissions will not be included in official results.
Virtual results will be updated by the end of the day on January 31st, and after the completion of live racing.
