The first World Championships for coastal rowing took place in Cannes in 2007, in the form of Endurance racing. Beach Sprints was added to the World Rowing roster in 2015, after being contested at the Mediterranean Beach Games in Italy. Beach Sprints then went on to debut its first World Championship final in 2019 in Shenzhen, China.
