(1) Events.  There are sixteen (16) event categories for both men and women plus three relay races:

Open, College, and Masters categories (Anyone over 18 or enrolled in college):

(2) Event Specifications.

  • Open Men / Women -  Collegiate rowers ranked for points with open competitors not included. Seeded by 2km PR.

  • Lightweight Men / Women - Lightweight men must weigh 165 lbs or less.  Lightweight women must weigh 135 lbs or less.  Collegiate rowers ranked for points with open competitors not included.  Seeded by 2km PR.

  • Collegiate Novice Men / Women - Competitors may not have rowed in any organized regattas prior to the Fall 2016 season.  Collegiate rowers only.  Seeded event.  You cannot have rowed with a college crew in any Spring 2016 regattas.

  • U15 Men/Women - For high school competitors ages 12-14 on regatta day.  No time handicaps.  High school students only! Seeded by 2km PR.

  • U17 Men/Women- For high school competitors ages 15-16 on regatta day.  No time handicaps. High school students only! Seeded by 2km PR.

  • U19 Men/Women– For high school competitors ages 17 – 19 on regatta day.  No time handicaps.  High school students only! Seeded by 2km PR.

  • Youth LT Men/Women – For high school competitors ages 12-19 on regatta day.  Seeded by 2km PR.  High school students only!

  • Never-ever Men / Women - For competitors who have never rowed in a competition on the water (at any Fall or Spring regattas), and have not previously competed at an indoor rowing championship.  

  • Masters Men / Women - For competitors age 23 and over on regatta day.  No time handicaps.  

  • Veterans Men / Women - For competitors age 40 and over on regatta day.  There is an age-based time adjustment (see Item #11, Age-based Time Adjustment).  

  • Coxswains Men / Women - Must have coxed a race in the 2016 fall regattas and Should not have rowed in a 2016 fall or spring regatta.  If you have competed as a rower, then you belong in the lightweight category.  Men must weigh 135 lbs or less; women 128 lbs or less.  Race distance is 500 meters.  

  • Team Relay Race - Teams must consist of four (4) men and four (4) women.  Each team member will race 500 meters and then get up and tag the next team member.  Each team is assigned to one lane (rowing machine).  Relay members cannot be competing in the Dash events.  All relay team members must have competed in either a 2,000 meter event or the coxswain event.  Each team must furnish two (2) ergometer holders.  No need to pre-register, just have team ready to compete at race time.  Programs can enter more than one relay team.

  • Club Relay Race - Teams must consist of two (2) men and two (2) women.  Each team member will race 500 meters and then get up and tag the next team member.  Each team is assigned to one lane (rowing machine).  Relay members cannot be competing in the Dash events.  All relay team members must have competed in either a Club, Masters or Veterans 2,000 meter event.  This event is not for college clubs.  No need to pre-register, just have team ready to compete at race time.  Programs can enter more than one relay team.

  • Youngsters Men / Women - 12 and under.  4 minute race to go as far as you can in meters.  All competitors get a free regatta t-shirt with paid individual entry by parent in another event.  No team points awarded for places.

  • Open Dash Events – Limited to 40 lanes.  Each person entered must have rowed an earlier 2000 meter event and must supply an erg holder. The number allowed to enter from any team may be limited to 2 or 3.  You cannot compete in the Team Relay event if you are in the Dash events.  Race distance for Dash Events is 500 meters.  Only top 2 (two) score team points.   

(3) Race Parameters.  

Concept 2 ergometers will be used.  Race distance is 2000 meters for all competitors except coxswains who race 500 meters. Competitors may use the damper settings of their choice, but it may be changed during the race.  

The regatta will use TV monitors clearly visible to all competitors and spectators to indicate leaders in races. All times will be sent to Concept 2 for entry in the 2018 World Rankings.  

(4)   Weigh-ins.  Weigh-in for Lightweight competitors and coxswains will be held Saturday morning,

February 3, 2018, from 7:30 AM – 9:00 AM and 12:10 PM – 1:30 PM.   You must weigh-in only once (prior to your heat). Weight limits are as follows:

Lightweight College Men:  165 lbs or less

Lightweight Youth Men: 155 lbs or less*  *C2 and WIRC recognize 165 lbs as lightweight for all males. Any male in the 155-165 lbs window will race in their respective agegroup event but are encouraged to weigh-in and be noted as WIRC qualifying lightweight*

Lightweight College and High School Women:  135 lbs or less

Coxswains        Men:  135 lbs or less Women:  128 lbs or less

(5) Warm-up.  

There will be machines available in the auxiliary gym for warm-up prior to heats and final races.  Warm-up must be completed prior to entering the gym floor to compete.  Races will start on time, so complete your warm-up before getting on a machine for a heat or final.

(6) Awards.  There are medals for the top three finishers in all events except for the Recreation, Parents and Youngster events.   

There is also a team competition for collegiate, high school, and club teams.  Points can be earned only by four members of a team in each event plus only one (the best) team relay finish, and only top two from a team in each Dash event. In the open events where college and club athletes will compete with each-other, the ranking among competitors of like category only will be used for points. Points earned for each place are as follows:

1st: 25 pt. 2nd: 22 pt. 3rd: 20 pt. 4th: 18 pt. 5th: 16 pt.

6th: 15 pt. 7th: 14 pt. 8th: 13 pt. 9th: 12 pt. 10th: 11 pt.

11th 10 pt. 12th 9 pt. 13th 8 pt. 14th 7 pt. 15th 6 pt.

16th 5 pt. 17th 4 pt. 18th 3 pt. 19th 2 pt. 20th 1 pt.

The Relay Teams (4 men and 4 women) will earn points as seen above.  Top three teams will win medals for each team member.  Only one entry from any program may earn team points.  You are allowed to enter more than one team.  All relay team members must have competed in either a 2,000 meter event or the coxswain event.

The top three places in each Dash Event will receive medals and winner receives a stein, however only the top two finishers per team will earn points.

The Team Point Trophies will be awarded to teams earning the most points in the following events:  

Collegiate Point Trophy Events:  Open, LT, Novice, Never-Ever, Coxswain, Dashes, Team Relay

High School Point Trophy Events:  Youth LT, U19, U17, U15, Coxswain, Dashes, Youth Team Relay  

Club Point Trophy Events:  Open, LT, Never-Ever, Masters, Veterans, Club Relay  

(7) Entry Information.  

The entry fee is $15 per competitor. All entries must be made by Tuesday, January 27, 2018.  After this date, a late fee of $5 will be added. Birthdate and 2km personal record (PR) or goal need to be included for every entrant.  All entries must have the waiver form signed by each competitor.  https://tinyurl.com/IndoorsWaiver

There will be free housing available for college students at the ARC Gym on the basketball court.  Bring your own sleeping gear.  The space is limited to first come, first served, for 230 people in same gym. (9) Concessions.  

There will not be a food concession stand at the competition sight.  The food concession is handled by the University, historical interest has been too low, and other food sales are prohibited. Fine designs will be on site for event apparel sales.   

(10) Parking.  There is free parking for everyone at Maclellan Gym (the competition sight).  

(11) Time Handicap Adjustment.  The time handicap adjustments for Veteran Men and Women are as follows:

40-50: 1.0 seconds per year over 40

51-60: 10.0 seconds plus 2 seconds per year over 50

61-70: 30.0 seconds plus 3 seconds per year over 60

71-80: 60.0 seconds plus 5 seconds per year over 70

81-up: 110.0 seconds plus 7 seconds per year over 80

(12) WIRC

As a satellite regatta for the World Indoor Rowing Championships held February 17-18, 2018, Concept 2 will provide round trip plane tickets for up to four (4) qualifiers provided they can win the event they enter at the Tennessee Indoor Rowing Championships and that their time is at or below the time standard.  (Note that there are no age adjustments to the time standards.)  Should more than four (4) competitors qualify, the four (4) whose times are the largest time difference below the time standard in their age group will be designated to receive qualifier status. (13) Ergometers for Sale.  

There will be Concept 2 Model "D" Rowing Machines with the new PM5 monitor for sale. Gray or Black. The cost is $825 per machine (the machines retail for $900 plus shipping).  Also, for sale will be Concept 2 Model “E” machines with the PM5 monitor at $1,000 (this machine retails for $1100 plus shipping).  All machines will be assembled and available after the regatta.  Orders for machines must be received by January 10, 2017 with a 50% down payment (non-refundable).  Please email [email protected] to place your order and arrange payment. Payments will be made to Robert Espeseth by check. Credit cards can be processed with a 3% fee.

(14) Admission.  There is no admission charge for spectators.

(15) Results.  

The times posted by competitors will be forwarded to Concept 2 for inclusion in the 2018 World Ranking.  Results will be sent to all teams the following week after the competition via e-mail, or you can obtain a printed copy by leaving a self-addressed, stamped envelope with the regatta director.  Also, results will be sent to Row2k for publication on their website.
