You will pass by Granville Island if you walk from the regatta site to the start area: Here is the walking route.
South Granville has great boutique shops, as does West 4th Avenue in Kitsilano.
You might want to check out Burnaby Lake, home to the Cascadia Regatta (although in 2014, the Cascadia Regatta Committee will be putting on the Rowing Canada Aviron Canadian Masters Championships).
